Anastasia

Anastasia reached for Dakota as a dizzying wave of panic hit her. She pressed a hand to her heart, visions of blood-covered ice popping into her mind. What the hell is happening?

“Ana! What’s wrong?” Dakota steadied her, and Anastasia shut her eyes against the onslaught of images.

Death, destruction, genocide.

“Help us, Phoenix.” A familiar voice filled her mind, and Anastasia straightened.

“Dakota, we need to go back to the Guisnow world.”

“What?” He turned to her.

Why hadn’t the thought crossed her mind sooner? “We need to go now.” Anastasia waved her hand and a portal appeared.

“Are you leaving so soon?” Nix and Nallia rushed toward them.

“We want to check on your world,” Anastasia said quickly. “Vincent has been tearing through the others and we need to warn your queen.”

Nix scoffed at her concern. “My world is highly protected, Phoenix.”

“I understand, but I’ve seen things, Nix. We have to warn them.”

“Very well, I wish to come with you.”

“And I as well,” Nallia offered.

Nix smiled at her. “You cannot navigate it without me, Phoenix. You nearly landed in a trap the last time you visited.”

“True.” She couldn’t see the harm in them coming; if anything, it would be a smart decision. “Argento!” she called as the Brute king walked past, his young daughter in his arms. “Tell Tony we have gone back to warn the Guisnows of the possibility of attack.”

His eyes widened slightly but he nodded. “I will. Travel safely.”

“Let’s go.” Anastasia turned back to her group.

They stepped through the portal and into a war.

Brutes screamed in agony as arrows punctured their bodies.

Anastasia immediately threw up a shield around the four of them so they could make it safely through the fray. She felt it begin to drain her, but she had no choice.

“This is madness!” Nix yelled. A few bodies of Guisnows lay on the white snow, but the majority of casualties seemed to be Brutes. “I thought the Brutes were on our side!” Amethyst eyes bore into Anastasia’s as they moved.

“The Brute king and his loyal followers are. These are Vincent’s beasts,” Dakota said angrily as he looked around at the carnage. “And it’s not just Brutes,” he added when they spotted the Drycos and Eremus charging a group of Guisnows.

“Step over that wire,” Nix instructed, his voice tight.

For the most part, they were able to avoid the beasts, their attention primarily on breaking past the archers, but as they got closer, the population of beasts grew and they began fighting against the shield.

Anastasia’s shield blocked punch after claw, as well as the Brute blades shoved against it. Her vision swam for a moment, the magic taking its toll on her.

“I have to drop the shield,” she warned them. “Ready?”

“Hell yeah,” Dakota growled.

“Let’s end them,” Nallia added, spinning her sword with the skill of someone who’d wielded it most of their life.

Nix simply nodded, and Anastasia dropped the shield. They were immediately assaulted by five Brutes. Anastasia took out one with magic, the other with her sword, and together they fought their way toward the castle.
